With hostilities over in Europe, F/Sgt. Tamkin was transferred to the Middle East Command as engineering ground crew in preparation for operations in the Far East with Tiger force. An operation which never occurred as hostilities with Japan ended.

Lancaster UL/G. for George.
Pilot Flt/Lt. Frank Collins RCAF DFC and Flight Engineer Flt/Sgt Ken Tamkin RAF are at the controls of UL/G. With the rest of the crew closed-up at their crew stations, G for George is made ready for take off. This photograph was taken on 22nd of March 1945 prior to departing Fiskerton at 11.20 to attack Hildesheim-arriving safely back at Fiskerton at 16.25. Flt/Lt. Collins and crew flew 18 of their 30 operations in this Lancaster. Like the crew, this Lancaster survived the war. She was a type B1, serial number SW276, fitted with Merlin 24 engines. Made by Metropolitan-Vickers and assembled by A.V. Roe. Her service life lasted from January 1945 until June 1945. She was scrapped off in 1947. |

We have been informed of the death of William Millard, the crews rear Gunner. Martin and I would like to express our condolonces to William's family on their loss. A very brave man and a Lion among men.
(extract of the email from Mr McDonald) We have been informed of the passing of W MILLARD, William (Bill) - Peacefully, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, December 15, 2012. William (Bill) Millard, of Tillsonburg passed away with his family by his side, at the age of 87 years. Beloved husband of the late Evelena Millard (July 2011). Loving, caring father of Tim Millard and his wife Anne of London and Tom Millard and his wife Lois of Port Burwell. Cherished grandfather of Bill, Bob (Tracy), and Charlie Millard. Great- grandfather of Natalie, Alexis, Cole, Kaylee, Kyle and Quinton. Dear brother of Sam Millard and brother-in-law of Eva Robbins, Gord Bentley and Betty Millard. Bill leaves behind an extended family of nieces and nephews and all of their families. Also survived by his sister-in-law Maggie Esseltine. The family will receive friends and relatives at OSTRANDER'S FUNERAL HOME, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519- 842-5221) on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will commence on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. from Ostrander's Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Mohr officiating. Interment will follow in the Tillsonburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bayham Station # 1 Fire Fighters Association or charity of your choice. |
